Hello, for most of you it has been a while since you’ve seen one of these posts and then there are actually several hundred of you that have never received an Absolute Unit newsletter, since you subscribed after the most recent post was published.. back in February. Sorry about that. This is an exciting update.
As I’ve continued to work on the next chapter of the ‘Theory of Soccer’ series, nested within the overall ‘Absolute Unit’ front office theory cinematic universe, one of my goals has been to properly weave together the story of the origins and development of soccer analytics writing (the subject of the most recent chapter) with soccer tactics writing (the subject of the next chapter) as a way of reconciling the two.
In an effort to do this accurately and faithfully, I started digging back into time through old blog posts (many of which were deleted but partially salvaged via the internet archive), and I must say it’s just way too fun, too fascinating. In fact, it has been so interesting for this lover of soccer blogging, that I started cataloging my discoveries in the hopes of having a robust inventory of insightful nuggets and timeline to draw upon to complete the next chapter (and others).
At some point I wondered, should I just insert a standalone chapter that tells the history of soccer analytical blogging before progressing on through the cycle as planned, and indeed I started writing such a draft. I consulted with the best soccer writer I know John Muller — you know of The Athletic and formerly of space space space and we decided this rich soccer blogging history deserves to be told in a different medium. It deserves to be discussed.
On Monday morning, the first episode of “Post Script” a podcast about how the internet transformed soccer analysis will drop over at the Post Script substack. We’re excited to share this with you and chat about some of the really cool things we’ve found paging back through what might as well be ancient history these days (blog posts from a decade ago, lol). We aim to explore why these old (oft deleted) blogs are important and how we might reflect on them today and in today’s context. Do me a favor and hop over there to Post Script to subscribe. That way you’ll get the podcast in your inbox Monday morning.
Absolute Unit and the Theory of Soccer continue over here, but this spin-off podcast will be an important contribution to where we go from here and I expect I’ll learn something important from this that will contribute to this series. Hope you’ll join us for these.
